About
Paul Gauguin was disappointed with Impressionism and frustrated by the lack of recognition and financial success in France. He wandered from Paris to the Caribbean, to Brittany, and in 1891, he sailed to French Polynesia expecting to find a tropical paradise. Gauguin was drawn to the art of Africa and Asia, and here he could pursue a new aesthetic. Here Gauguin employs that new aesthetic. He expresses only the essence of the figures, the sand, and the ocean. The blocks of color and black outline describe the women’s bodies. The pink, purple and orange areas suggest sand only because the ocean is behind.
