About
This image from White’s 1949 City Surf series captures a lively San Francisco sidewalk. As what appears to be a construction worker passes a pedestrian bystander, he totes a large arrow sign. This subject matter is characteristic of White’s interest in street signs, especially when they are momentarily removed from their functioning positions. The bright white of the man’s uniform and the excess paint around the arrow provide an illuminating contrast to the darkened surroundings.
