About
San Francisco is a double portrait streetscape of two women who pose in front of a peeling painting brick facade. As one woman’s gaze meets the camera’s aperture, the other woman looks off into the distance with laughter, infusing the image with a sense of posed candidness. The larger series to which this work belongs, City Surf, was executed in the late 1940s and early 1950s when White began teaching at the California School of Fine Arts. These images are regarded for their captivating technical achievement, as well as their utility as small documentary tokens of mid-century San Francisco.
