About
This 1973 image was taken late in White’s career and a mere three years before his death in 1976. The perspective of the photo is jarring at first, as the central construction site image floats in the center, in between what seems to be a bold black and white diagonal stripe framing. It appears that White created this illusion by taking the photograph in between two parallel bars of a hazard sign, framing the composition with another element of the surrounding environment. The image serves as a cleverly composed look at urban change, a time capsule of 1970s Boston littered with scaffolding and concrete.
