About
This dramatic portrait is emblematic of White’s most successful style of photography. Executed in 1942, this image was taken during White’s time in Portland before being drafted to fight in World War II later that year. Although clearly and intensely staged, the composition still feels intimate on account of the subject, Christopher Larkins, appearing relaxed and drifting, if not fully, asleep. White lived most of his life struggling with his sexuality, and intimate portraits of men, like this one, remain some of his most sought-after images.
