About
Bullet Holes (Middle Canyon, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah) is an image as enigmatic as it is attractive. Taken during White’s travel stint in the early 1960s, its characteristic of his highly cropped nature images. At first glance, the bright white holes on the Canyon’s wall almost appear like stars on a black night sky. As a closer look reveals, and the title indicates, the perforations in the canyon’s surface are actually bullet holes. How the surface of this National Park’s canyon became riddled with bullet holes is perplexing, and their presence makes the photograph even more ominous.
