About
Anna Atkins’s amateur practice in botany is what led her to the pursuit of photography at such an early stage in the medium’s development when many women had not yet become involved. This cyanotype photograph, made between 1853 to 1854, depicts a single frond of royal fern and was meant to be used for scientific reference. At the bottom of the print in the center, she hand wrote a label with the species name, “Osmunda Regalis.”
