About
Picasso playfully combines drawn objects (a pipe, sheet music, and a tabletop) with a trompe l’oeil gilt frame (printed wallpaper), illusionistic shadows, and a signed nameplate. At the top of the sheet music is “Ma Jolie,” meaning “My Pretty.” This may cause the viewer to believe it is the name of the composition. While it was in fact the refrain from a popular song, it was Picasso’s pet name for his mistress at the time, Eva Gouel.
