About
Known for social realism, Shahn portrayed the political and social relationships of contemporary life. Eventually, his interests shifted to also include the examination of the spiritual and emotional realities of mankind. This painting shows this shift in his style as the hunched figure fades into the background, obscured by the towering instruments. The figure clutches at his head, clearly in distress, while the clarinets (one of which appears to be surrounded by tongues of flame at the reed) and horn affront him with their music.
