About
This oil painting of Thiebaud’s renders eight lipsticks of varying vibrant shades into two rows. Hues of orange, pink, and red give each vertically standing lipstick individuality, while the tube of every one is rather uniform in shape and gleaming gold tones. There is a neat cylindrical symmetry to each tube, and perhaps a disquieting visual allusion to bullet casings. The deep periwinkle shadows of each lipstick lean to the right of the canvas, bleeding into the others and connecting each row of four.
