About
Thiebaud depicts a lone piece of pie locked away in a glass case with his Caged Pie oil piece. Placing the pie in the middle of the canvas, covered by delicately painted shadows of the glass, allows for an element of enticement. By making this still-life painting of a sole pie rather than multiples, Thiebaud presses on viewers’ buttons of cravings and indulgence. The glass covering exagerates this feeling of hungry temptation. Thiebaud successfully invokes childhood memories of locked away sweets by parents with this almost-amusing painting of confined pie.
