Gág's self-portrait, drawn on top of a grocery bag, shows the beginnings of her attention to shadow and light. In an almost even split, the left-side of Gág's face becomes obscured in darkness, as shown through Gág's usage of shading, while the right-side becomes brightened with the addition of the color white. Around the time of this portrait's creation, Gág was attending The Minneapolis School of Art (1914-1917).
