About
Van Gogh painted the majority of his olive tree series in Saint-Remy-de-Provence in 1889 while staying at the asylum. While interested in the natural effects and contrasts in the foliage, he found meaning in the trees and attempted to express it. He once commented he tried to convey a “gentle and comforting feeling” through the addition of contemporary human figures rather than depicting what the past may have looked like, specifically biblical stories.
