About
Van Gogh carefully chose this brightly lit composition because of long diagonal lines that naturally cut through the landscape. This canal in Arles (FR) was often a spot to do laundry; on the far bank, you can see sheets laid out on the lawn despite the lack of the washerwoman cleaning them. The mechanics of the bridge, combined with the natural landscape, also adds interest to the painting, showing how carefully he chose to paint this in the open air.
