About
Van Gogh intentionally flattened the picture plane to appeal to the aesthetics of Japanese prints of which he admired. In this depiction of his bedroom at the southern French down Arles, he evokes colors that express ‘repose’ or ‘sleep,’ and though the colors have since faded from violet to blue, it gives a sense of his feeling towards his subject matter.
