Van Gogh depicts himself as a working artist; he wears an artist’s smock with his pipe, which calmed him. Due to his financial situation, he was unable to pay models to practice figure painting and often created self-portraits. They offer a window into how he saw himself in that time, for example, when using the pipe would calm him and allow him to produce good work.
