About
This self-portrait of van Gogh takes after the color pallet and lighting effects found in the work of Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886), whom van Gogh admired. The light comes from the right side of the canvas, and highlights the right side of his face, leaving the other side in deep shadow, the pale skin contrasts from the deep red background.
