About
Van Gogh would often paint himself in place of other models due to financial reasons; in this self-portrait, he experiments with bold colors and loose brushstrokes. Characterized as one of his most daring color experiments, he uses red and green strokes of paint within his face, loosely blending them. At the same time, the background consists of a blue-purple with orange enveloping his head like a ripple of water.
