About
Van Gogh uses thick strokes of pigment to add visible color contrasts throughout the painting. While the overall composition is full of dark colors, he uses short strokes of lighter pigments scattered across the canvas, notably the pale pink in his suit jacket. His face and hair also incorporate these contrasting brushstrokes of light and shadow.
