About
This self-portrait characterizes van Gogh in dark pastel colors as he looks to the side with a thin face and furrowed eyes. The majority of Van Gogh’s self-portraits were made in Paris between 1886 and 1888 when he was poor and couldn’t adequately pay models; therefore, he painted himself instead. He also couldn’t afford new canvases or paints, thus uniquely he painted on the back of studies done previously, on the back of this painting is ‘Study for “The Potato Eaters.”
