About
Van Gogh sought out subjects for portrait painting after moving to Antwerp (BE) and found only ‘ladies of easy virtue’ would agree to pose though they have never met. This woman is a prostitute recognizable to a viewer contemporary to van Gogh, due to her low-cut dress and eye makeup. He paints her in blue tones, which complement her brown hair and eyes.
