About
Madame Augustine Roulin is the wife of Joseph Roulin, the postman at Arles (FR) and a close friend to van Gogh. She sits against a boldly patterned background with a rope in her hand, which attaches to a cradle. Van Gogh aptly inscribed the painting "La Berceuse," which means "lullaby" and "she who rocks the cradle."
