Van Gogh depicts Cafe de l’Alcazar, where he took his meals while staying at Arles in southern France. He was attracted to the naturally occurring clashing and contrasting colors which expressed passions of humanity to the artist. The gas-lit scene imposes on the quality of colors during the night.
