About
Van created this unconventional nocturnal painting due to the bright colors of the scene. The gas-lit cafe in Arles radiates yellow and orange, which then intensifies the blues of night. Astronomical research also proves his keen observation as he painted the night sky exactly as it was the night of 16 or 17 September 1888.
