About
Van Gogh uses a hard black outline around the flowers and vase to flatten the space, likely taking influence from the Japanese woodblock prints he admired. Here he uses only a few colors, green, red, and pink, in varying shades to develop depth. One also takes notice of his thick application of paint, which adds texture and depth.
