This painting was a gift to his brother Theo and his wife, who had just had a son. The blossoms against a brilliant blue sky take after Japanese printmaking, which van Gogh admired greatly. Almond trees are among the first flowering of spring, and thus the symbol of new life, fitting for the gift of a newborn child.
