About
This portrait of a woman reading a modern yellow book came from complete imagination as van Gogh experimented in ‘de tete’ technique challenging for him. Also noteworthy of this painting is the text in the woman’s hands; the yellow cover signifies the modernity of the title; at the time, it was unacceptable for a woman to partake in modern novels. Van Gogh bold painting contrasts the woman in dark colors while the book cover and backgrounds remain a bright yellow.
