About
The colored woodcut is an abstract expression of an archer on horseback riding up a hilltop to a castle on the top of a hill. The landscape in the background is divided into separate parts, separated by black strokes. Kandinsky uses colors to engage the senses of all viewers because he believes that colors correspond with sounds. The dark colors, occasionally contrasted with a bright yellow, shows the struggle between ominous nature and hope in this complex composition. The yellow shading of the horse and the archer shows that hope is approaching the hilltop to depict the archer’s struggle and his importance to the scene.
