About

Study for ‘Painting with White Border (Moscow)’ was one of the studies that Kandinsky completed over five months before he finally arrived at theculmination of his efforts, Painting with White Border (Moscow). This abstract expression consisted of bold strokes and shading highlighting different areas of the painting. To create a sense of place, Kandinsky sought to capture the unique experiences one has in Moscow, including a three-horse sled and the oral traditions of storytelling. The three-horse sled can be seen on the bottom right corner, showing the tracks of the horses on the snow. The oral storytelling of the story of St. George can be seen in the top center of the painting with three jagged points resembling a dragon back. The combination of the colors and strokes prompts the viewer to use all their sense whilst viewing this painting.
