About
This painting was inspired by Kandinsky’s Painting with a White Border, which was an abstract expression of the city of Moscow. In Sketch I for ‘Painting with White Border’, Kandinsky experiments with dark colors and bold strokes. Strokes in various colors intertwine with one another and are set among planes of different colors. His use of colors emulated his idea that colors corresponded to different sounds, and he wanted to capture the “emotional sounds” of Moscow. The sounds he sought to visualize was the sounds of a three-horse sled (which can be seen in the three bold strokes at the top of the painting) and the story of St. George (shown through the jagged lines on the top right of painting emulating a dragon back). These stories and sounds and traditionally passed on orally, and the recognition of them visually gives the painting a sense of place.
