About
In this artwork, Kandinsky paints an abstract expression of a sea battle. Although the painting consists largely of amorphous shapes, the scene is still recognizable. In the center of the painting, a pair of sailing ships are in combat, and their masts are waving on top of the slender black lines. The water surrounding the water is painted with red to symbolize the violence and action. The cannons dropping the water and the waves caused by the battle are shown through black strokes. Kandinsky believed that colors corresponded to sounds, thus the use of many colors in the painting shows the chaotic energy of the scene and immerses the viewer’s senses.
