About
Autumn II is an abstract expression of an autumn scene, inspired by French impressionism. The painting is separated into two sections, the landscape and the road on the top and the reflection of the scene on the bottom of the painting. The forms resembling the landscape are outlined by dark strokes and painted with different pastel colors blended together to depict the texture in the landscape. This is contrasted with dark colors to highlight certain elements in the painting creating a complex composition of colors and planes that show an abstract landscape. Kandinsky believed that colors corresponded to different sounds, thus, the painting prompts viewers to engage all their senses to fully understand the painting.
