About
The Tokaido Road linked Edo (present-day Tokyo) with Kyoto, the imperial capital. Hakone was Station No. 11 along this route, and Hiroshige's woodblock series featured all 53 stations. These were so popular that he created several additional series based on the Tokaido Road.
"Hakone was an extremely hazardous mountain pass, and the long line of travelers hiking through the narrow gorge seems dwarfed by the rocky and dramatic peaks. Only the smooth slopes of Mount Fuji are rendered in white in the distant background. The masterful composition and creative use of color set this print apart as one of Hiroshige’s great accomplishments from his first Tokaido series."
