About
Plate 36 demonstrates Sonia Delaunay's interest in simultanism, as each shape adjacent to the other affects its color. Delaunay uses neutral tones, as well as orange and off-red colors, complementing them with the blue of some of the squares. The color stencil is both ironic and apt in the fact that it is framed/structured in itself by a rectangular canvas. The off-white color of the background is seen through cracks between the shapes, emphasizing that the color stencil is a layer of shapes on top of shapes. Some shapes presumably overlap one another, as evidenced by the absence of "cracks" between some of them.
