About
As the title describes, this 1559 portrait of Sofonisba Anguissola’s family includes her father at the center, seated, surrounded by two of her siblings at his either side. While each of the children look toward their father, he sits between them looking straight out to the viewer as he grasps his son’s hand with his own. Anguissola’s father Amilcare supported his children’s aspirations by providing them with a good education, and encouraging Sofonisba to become a painter even though it was not a common profession for women at the time.
