About

This portrait was previously attributed to an earlier court painter of King Phillip II, Sánchez Coello, but has since been identified as the work of Sofonisba Anguissola. Anguissola also served as an official court painter to the King after moving to Milan in 1559. In Portrait of a Boy at the Spanish Court Anguissola employs her characteristic soft gradient shading, which identifies the work as hers in contrast with Coello’s sharper lines. Anguissola lived and worked under the patronage of a royal pension from 1559 until her death at age 93.
