About
This painting is considered a defining masterpiece of Botticelli's later works. While the artist is known for his beautiful Madonnas and large allegorical paintings such as 'The Birth of Venus,' after political upheavals in the 1490s, his work became more somber. Here, Christ's head is surrounded by a halo of angels 'en grisaille' —in grey monotone. They hold 'Arma Christi,' the symbols of Christ's death and suffering while Christ himself is both sorrowful and serene.
