About
This personal and original portrait depicts five young boys, staring seriously directly at the camera. They are nicely dressed for church on Easter morning, leaning on the hood of a car in their Southside Chicago neighborhood. The cleancut innocent of the boys contrasts with a gritty, urban atmosphere. Russell Lee was a documentary photographer for the U.S. government and illustrated the lives of everyday Americans, something certainly accomplished in this portrait, in which each expression is wholly original.
