About
Slow Down Freight Train is an example of one of Piper’s 1940s semi-abstract blues-inspired works. Through oil paints, Piper depicts a migrating African-American man with overexaggerated features. His outstretched neck reaches for the light to the right and signifies new beginnings and hope. The flat, subdued color palette includes an array of greens, with the dark green of the land being the same as that on his skin, physically connecting him to the homeland in which he is leaving. The stark redness of his shirt against all of the green and brown hues represents a new start and the courage he holds to move away.
