About
Weaning the Calves by Rosa Bonheur is a beautiful depiction of a cow and her five calves who have been separated by a haphazard fence. The mother is forced to wean her babies due to this man-made barrier. We see Bonheur explore the relationship between the natural and the man-made world in this painting. The depiction of the anatomy of these animals is almost scientific. The scene is thought to have occurred on the high pasturelands the Pyrenees, where a lot of Rosa Bonheur’s nature paintings are meant to have been inspired from. The artist took a trip there in 1850.
