About
Ploughing in Nevers is by Rosa Bonheur’s first early success and is housed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Bonheur paints twelve oxen peacefully ploughing the field. Her use of diagonal lines leads the eye through the sunlit region of the painting, near the oxen. The painting’s muted palette is reminiscent of earlier landscape paintings by the Dutch. Her stylist is similar to the Realists and yet is almost an ode to the Romantics in its scale and perspective.
