About
Here de Hooch establishes a contrast between the old and the new, as the deteriorating wall on the right opposes the pristine house on the left. The stone tablet that rests above the doorway was originally over the entrance of the Hieronymusdale Cloister in Delft, but was removed. The tablet can be translated as, ‘This is in Saint Jerome’s vale, if you wish to repair to patience and meekness. For we must first descend if we wish to be raised.’ Although the architecture in this work is more important than the figures, these figures are recognizable from other de Hooch works of this period, such as another work at the National Gallery, “An Interior, with A Woman Drinking with Two Men.”
