About
This genre scene, painted by Renoir in a period during which he was exploring classical styles of art, depicts a group of women washing white clothes in a river. Two of the women, who are actively washing the fabric, lean over the bank of the river as they focus their gaze on the water beneath them. The third woman stands behind them as she is distracted by, and seemingly in conversation with, a child. Vertical repeating brushstrokes create the bushes and grass which surrounds them. Hues of emerald, pale blue, and sienna are the primary tones throughout the piece.
