About
This portrait, executed by Renoir during his impressionist period, depicts a young couple, Nini Lopez and his brother Edmund, seated in a Parisian theatre. Nini is central figure in this composition, as much of the light is concentrated on her face and body. Attending a performance at the theatre was not only about watching the performance itself, but also being seen by others. Therefore, Renoir portrayed Nini as exhibiting her presence to others while Edmund, who sits in the shadows in the background, searches the audience with his binoculars. The couple are wearing elegant garments and coils of pearls ornament Nini’s collar bone and sternum.
