About
This portrait, painted by Renoir during a time in his life when he was exploring a less severe version of classical painting, depicts a young woman seated on a cushioned chair as she strums a guitar. She gazes down at her delicate fingers resting on the guitar strings, apparently focused on the positioning of her hand. The cool blue and bright white hues of her dress contrast the dull chartreuse hues of the walls and carpet around her. This central subjects of this painting, the female figure and music, exemplify two themes are used throughout Renoir’s work.
