About
This genre piece, painted by Renoir in 1876, is one of the most celebrated works of impressionist art. The entire panel depicts a typical sunday afternoon at the Moulin de la Galette in Paris, a time and place when working class parisions would gather to dance, dine, and socialize. This particular left third of the entire panel focuses on the dancers in the middle ground of the original painting. Surrounded by other couples around them, one couple, at the center of this image, embraces each other as they look toward the viewer. The visible brushstrokes and hues of green, blue, and red that melt into one other add a dynamism to the painting that is unique to impressionism.
