About
This open-air genre piece, painted by Renoir during his impressionist period, depicts four of Renoir's acquaintances socializing on the Moulin de la Galette. The Moulin de la Galette was a place where working class Parisians often went to drink and socialize. Visible in this composition are fellow artists Monet, Corday, and Lami, all of whom are huddled around a table. The model Nini Lopez, whose back is turned toward the viewer as she overlooks those seated at the table, stands tall in her striped pink dress. Light falls on the faces and forms of the five people, making them more prominent against the shadows of the vibrant green foliage in the background.
