About
This vertically-oriented depiction of a couple dancing in a ballroom was executed by Renoir during his studies of classical styles of painting as a mature artist. The composition depicts two people, models Suzanne Valadon and Paul Auguste Lhote, in the closed ballroom dance position. Hues of pale blue and gray create an exceptional amount of detail in the drapes of the woman’s dress, and the black of the man’s formal attire contrasts vibrant green foliage in the background. This painting is one of a series of three pieces Renoir painted of couples dancing in different environments.
