About
This portrait, painted by Renoir in 1901 of his youngest son, depicts Claude Renoir, nicknamed “Coco,” as a child playing with a set of toy soldiers. Renoir executed this painting using elements of the impressionist style, such as visible brushstrokes in the background and hues of red, blue, and green, which add vibrance to the composition. The small soldiers were handed down from eldest son to youngest, and were loved by their father Renoir. Claude later became a ceramic artist.
