About
This painting of a couple dancing was executed by Renoir during a time in his life when he broke away from impressionism and focused on the classical style of painting. Merchant Paul Durand-Ruel commissioned this work in 1882, inspiring Renoir to create its two companion pieces, “Dance in the City,” and “Dance at Bougival,” that same year. Aline Charigot, Renoir’s future spouse, and his friend, Paul Lhote posed for this painting. In a closed ballroom dance position, Charigot and Lhote stand on a raise platform surrounded by emerald vegetation. Charigot smiles and gazes directly at the viewer in her vermilion bonnet and white dress, while Lhote presses his mouth against her temple. This painting is currently kept at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, France.
